Menorca, hidden treasure of the Balearic Islands

There are so many, where to start? By the three most beautiful? Difficult to choose. The one that regularly appears in the rankings of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, in Europe, or even in the world, is Cala Macarella . It must nevertheless be admitted that it has many rivals on the south coast of the island.

Playing the game of quoting two others, it would then be Cala Mitjana and Cala Pregonda , to remain in the list of the best known. There are, however, many other more discreet beaches to discover.

The Cami de Cavalls

This hiking trail, an old walkway inherited from the time of the knights, is a unique opportunity for the island of Menorca. It gives free access to hikers to go around the island on foot, crossing many wild and otherwise unreachable portions. This is the famous Spanish GR 223 , not to be confused with the also coastal but very different French route (the Tour du Cotentin).

Along the cliffs, crossing the pine forests, leading to splendid creeks, there the choice is difficult too, there are so many beautiful places. The Menorcan path is 186 km divided into 20 stages.

Historical Sites

If the history of the island is rich and turbulent, due in particular to its natural port, it is prehistory that conceals the most heritage treasures. Menorca, this flake of the Balearic Islands, less than 700 km ² , has more than 1500 prehistoric and protohistoric sites . So much so that an approach has been initiated, with UNESCO, so that the “Talayotic culture of Menorca” (which relates to island prehistory) is included on the list of world heritage . On the programme: taula , talayot , navetas … and necropolises.
