Nous y avons séjourné quelques jours en première étape des quelque 500 km (à vol d’oiseau) de la côte croate, de quoi se faire une idée des richesses de la région.

Emblématiques villes et villages sur la côte et dans les terres
Plusieurs villes et villages médiévaux agrémentent le paysage par leurs silhouettes qui dominent des lieux stratégiques. Nous avons particulièrement apprécié la vieille ville très connue de Rovinj qui semble émerger directement de l’Adriatique. Il faut dire que le noyau historique repose sur une petite île, rattachée au continent en 1763 pour les besoins d’extension.
Sur un promontoire qui permet de surveiller l’île de Cres, Labin offre aux visiteur·e·s quelques ruelles colorées à parcourir et des points de vue sur la mer (pour nous, un aperçu de la suite de l’aventure).
Davantage dans les terres, plusieurs villages en imposent par leur situation en sommet de colline. Deux ont particulièrement retenu notre attention, Buzet et Motovun, avec une préférence pour ce dernier, qui s’insère dans un paysage agroviticole et forestier de grande qualité.
La côte
Nous n’avons que peu profité de la côte, qui offre encore tout un potentiel d’exploration, en particulier dans la région de Pula, pointe sud de l’Istrie très découpée en contact avec le parc national de Brijuni.
À proximité de Labin, nous sommes allés sur la plage (plaža) de Prtlog, vers Duga Luka. C’est très beau, cependant, il ne s’agit pas de la meilleure plage pour la baignade, principalement en raison de l’arrivée d’eau douce qui trouble et refroidi le secteur.
Un lieu plus intéressant pour la baignade se situe légèrement au sud de Rovinj, où le parc forestier de Zlatni Rt donne accès à plusieurs plages. Nous y avons découvert un organisme marin particulier, un cténophore, appelé noix de mer. Il ressemble un peu à une méduse par son aspect gélatineux, mais n’est pas urticant, heureusement car c’est en bande que nous l’avons rencontré, impossible donc de l’éviter une fois dans l’eau. Sans connaissance particulière de ce taxon, il semble que les individus rencontrés appartiennent à l’espèce Mnemiopsis leidyi. Un animal en provenance d’Amérique du Nord qui a envahi la Mer Noire et semble se répandre progressivement en Méditerranée, non sans impact sur la faune locale.
Des paysages agréables
La topographie vallonnée de l’Istrie gagne progressivement en altitude d’ouest en est, au fur et à mesure que l’on se rapproche du massif montagneux nommé Učka, dont le point culminant est le mont Vojak (1401 m d’altitude). Ce dernier offre, par temps dégagé, un point de vue sur toute la région, ainsi que sur les îles de Cres, Krk et la région Kvarner (Rijeka et environs). L’accès au sommet se pratique par une longue route sinueuse, suivie d’une approche à pied à travers une belle forêt de hêtres.
Au cœur de l’Istrie, proche de Motovun et Buzet, plusieurs petites routes sinueuses offrent des points de vue attractifs sur le lac (jezero) Butoniga, entouré par un écrin forestier.
À l’amont de Buzet, la rivière Mirna mérite le détour, avec au programme quelques cascades et des gorges peu profondes, en particulier au niveau du hameau de Kotli (1 habitant·e selon Wikipedia).
Les paysages istriotes sont parfois comparés à ceux de la Toscane, dans tous les cas c’est beau ! Que ce soit la forêt, les plantations (nombreuses) d’oliviers, quelques curieuses formations terro-sableuses … jusqu’au “chardon” bleu Eryngium amethystinum qui égaie les abords des chemins.
En promenade, nous avons croisé quelques bêtes intéressantes (avis très subjectif 😉), notamment des lézards (lézards verts, lézards des murailles dalmates), mais également nombre de papillons et autres insectes comme la decticelle frêle (Yersinella raymondii) (une sauterelle au chant nocturne très discret) et Buprestis novemmaculata (un coléoptère qui affectionne les pins).
Logement
Des deux logements testés, un nous semble digne d’être recommandé, en particulier en raison de l’accueil sympathique des propriétaires, grâce auquels nous nous y sommes tout de suite trouvé bien (même avant la première gorgée de rakija (eau-de-vie) ou de thé maison). Hvala (merci) ! Le logement est un peu isolé. Il est probable qu’en parlant l’italien, le contact ait été encore meilleur. En effet, en raison de son passé et de sa situation géographique, l’Istrie compte de nombreux italophones.
